Mom, are we there yet?

Ok… So everyone has their heads in the clouds in some way, shape or form, i.e. LinkedIn, Salesforce.com, Facebook, etc.

But are we there yet?

This whole “cloud revolution” reminds me of the “managed services revolution” 10 years ago.  Heck, I was selling IP based monitoring of web sites for up/down status and charging $10.00/month for it and had no idea I was an MSP or for that matter, working in the cloud!  There are so many different definitions on what makes a service cloud based.  Here are my thoughts on what is and isn’t cloud, IMHO.

1.  If you access it remotely, it is a cloud app–SaaS

2.  If you pay for usage of someone else’s infrastructure like a utility, it’s a cloud app–IaaS

3.  If you do not have to buy new hardware and software (except a pc to connect) to it, it’s a cloud app—SaaS or HaaS

5.  If you do not have to pay for support anymore it is included in your monthly fee it’s a cloud app.

So to answer the question “Are we there yet?”.  I say, we are getting closer everyday but have a long way to go.

Be careful of who and what you trust.  When you get involved, like any good decision, make sure you are with a trustworthy company that has years of experience like www.eTegrity.com and has the back-end knowledge to help you wade though all the noise out there.
